261 - "His life was mine to take" - short spear vs home invasion (VIDEO)
Ancient solutions to modern problems part one
Last Wednesday at a private weapon study workshop I made reference to two different news stories that carried a similar theme: medieval type weaponry being used for defence against home invasion.
In this first example a hapless burglar chooses , of all houses, the one owned by a guy who trains for medieval warfare, you know, castle sieges, various edged weapon etc - great choice.
The results are as one might expect. Large blood loss but a living criminal thanks to the defender making a “point” of sparing his life.
Here’s the video followed by some notes:

Cross overs in training:
The reference we had made in the workshop was to the crossover between blunt and edged weapons when used in a thrusting manner.
Pounds per square inch and small surface areas of stick ends vs soft tissue can have almost identical effects (see post # 111 - Non typical use of impact weapon -Spear for an earlier look at this).
Other examples:
There is also the less thought of use of the spear as a thrusting (retained) weapon rather than being thrown - for example the Zulu Iklwa:
Not popular with British troops in 1879…
This enables it to be used very effectively in a crush / close quarters. In the example of the video, perfect for a modern house hallway.
The stabs are also very powerful as the bodyweight can be effectively utilised behind it while closing space as is described in the video.
This is absolute gold! So sorry it took till now to view these! A spear seems better than a bat in these close quarters! This gentleman seems like he is at home with the trusty old spear! Lucky burglar to have got away with his life... shame honor seems lost on most folk of today.
You just wouldn’t run into a thrusting spear would you?
