Relax!
This was tonight’s running theme - which is ironic when learning to counter a violent criminal assault, but it has very real advantages both for skill performance, cognition and also long term health.
All of the drills tonight contained some obvious and also - less obvious methods for achieving a more relaxed state.
Optimal breathing patterns
Bareknuckle striking
Constructing the “hammer”
Targeting and theory
Correct chain of force for optimal power

Blindsided!
Ambush / multiple attacker: This section was an introduction to the idea of completely missing a secondary threat to your side and being punched to the floor.
Fighting from the floor
WTF! - Simulating disorientation
GTFO! - Moving and fighting stand over threats from a counter dominant position in order to regain your feet and escape / fight on.
Anti - knife
Implications of knives in choice of tactics when fighting from the floor and some examples.
Bareknuckle striking
The Cross
Fast ways of dealing with the cross
Footwork
Position
Counter the grappler
Looking at achievable ways to disrupt attempts to grapple you while you are on the floor.
These are NOT fight enders or magic solutions to not knowing BJJ or some other nonsense.
This is looking at seriously hurting (pain and/or damage) someone trying to beat and strangle you so that you can transition to a more decisive tactic.
Non -stop chaotic transitions between standing punching and these grappling ideas - some good quality work - very scrappy!
Some nice mixes also of abilities from untrained and trained (boxing, karate, judo) people.
Wednesday 08_02_23_weapons and sparring
Weapon work tonight was taking a look at some of the issues raised in my book “Blunt weapon tactics” vs traditional stick fighting ideas.
This is especially pertinent to life in the UK - which tactical types (?!) would describe as a “non-permissive environment” for the average member of the public in terms of availability of legal defensive weapon options.
Blunt weapon sets were used to look at key ideas in disrupting and countering other blunt weapons but also knives and unarmed threats - for example multiple attackers.
All blunt weapon sets were alternated with striking pressure via longer sparring rounds of immediate response to punches.
No time to think, orient, scheme just… fight!
This work along with anaerobic sections made up the bulk of an hour of non stop training.
Extra section
Countering the boxer
A drill that I learned many years ago from my good friend Srba in Belgrade, countering the thug bully who uses boxing skills.
Ways of fast countering and achieving takedowns that fit the “self defence” context.
Trainees are pressured to improvise their own immediate takedown solution.
I then went through various suggestions for takedown ideas based on their size and context to create chains with striking, cranks and finish ideas.
