Tuesday 30_5_23
The usual Tuesday venue is closed so thanks to the few brave souls that journeyed once more to our second venue in the dark lands of Mordor…
Skills practice
Simple drills to make proper footwork second nature
Next adding in basic, high percentage strikes for survival fighting
Each strike is concentrated on to improve quality and performance across the group
Practicing contact and targeting the strikes
Where you throw from is what you get!
Adding simple versions of straight kicks into the skill set already learned.
Skill sparring practice for conditioning and synergy.
Defending the lead hand specifically.
Anti Knife Crime
A continuation and escalation on the work of the last few weeks in interrupting someone who is attempting to draw a knife from interview or close approach.
We are working as always from high percentage, documented cases rather than ANY style, method or art.
Trainee set up is to be square on and with their hands down as despite how cool you think you may be, life usually has other plans for you.
Fear/ terror and cognitive lag are huge potential hurdles that need to be acknowledged.
Methods of thinking and understanding various physiological problems as well as relentless but intelligent repetition are keys to overcoming these to build confidence and boldness of action.
These workshops are for average members of the public, not doormen, police or soldiers - and that is where performance is focused.
We rise to the level of our training rather than our expectation, so we must allow for our own failings as well as not assuming things will be performed “just so” - I have personal experience of this - having a range of responses to get to the tactic you want in a specific situation rather than just one, is a sound policy.
Entering
Seizing to control
Arm and shoulder breaks
Supportive striking: Here each trainee was on their own - as they will be if this were the real thing - in creatively constructing their own strike patterns, these then need to be explained and shown by them to the group.
Really nice and solid striking came out from all present - very direct, effective, utilising several possible options and also being delivered on both high and low lines of attack.
