“Four things”
Tonight’s workshop is based around four simple ideas that are assembled to illustrate certain combative principles and as a vehicle for increasing the demands placed on the trainee.
Work is constant for approximately 70 mins.
For newer/intermediate trainees, the pressure is therefore increased.
Contact and controlled roughness are also now a factor.
Fighting for your life will be rough - we introduce these elements in small increments over time to condition newer people and prepare them safely.
A fight for your life will not stop because you are tired, not ready, having a difficult week or “just not feeling it today”.
1 - Grappling:
High rep drilling:
Opportunities for nullifying the aggressor’s striking while creating strike openings of your own.
Towards experiencing realistic resistance to this.
Why and when you must try to maintain contact to gain an advantage and also keep you safer.
Understanding resistance in training - when it’s needed and when it is not:
Related: Please make sure to read this important article:
Scenario:
Using the drill tactics to achieve the opportunity for momentary head and arm control.
How to close down the aggressor’s remaining strike options in this moment.
How to apply knee strikes.
How to use resulting movement to facilitate a take down.
Follow up actions and / or escape.
What other options are immediately available if this takedown doesn’t work - they are not diminished enough, are too strong, large etc.
2 - Developing kick power
Kicks for survival fighting are for specific reasons - none of them include scoring points - the trainee MUST develop the ability to use kicks with devastating effect and in a context that is safe to use in a fight, otherwise they have little use and should be avoided in favour of other tactics.
None of this is to be confused with some sort of “self defence style” - these are simply generic, reliable tactics.
If the trainee can apply different and more technically complex tactics, they are free to do that when and if they ever need to.
Having said that, certain tactics have specific advantages that I am pointing out to the trainees as we go, ultimate choices are their own.
A partner drill to develop power in applying the rear thrusting kick (RTK).
Proper mechanics of this kick.
Targeting.
Options for those that lack the strength and conditioning to perform the RTK.
Possible counters.
3 - Situation drilling
Continuous randomised work in both applying and defending the RTK as well as palm striking in combination.
4 - “Combat fitness”
