So there I was at an MMA sparring class, partnered with a talented guy who, it transpired was great at kicking.

The right rear roundhouse to the head that I managed to slip enough to feel the wind from it pass my face was great.

Great kick.

It was so good and I was suitably thrilled with my evasion in open sparring against someone better than me, that I actually followed the foot with my eye and readied to launch my cross punch for his head, all the while thinking:

"Wow, what a great kick!”

That was when his other left foot hit me square across the side of the head, delivered by a turning kick.

It’s worth noting that someone this good had returned to contact work some time before after a lengthy break and was still recovering from reconstructive knee surgery from a training accident.

While doing bag work and focusing on rear roundhouse power, he had dislocated his knee joint. Which led to a year off training, NHS surgery, convalescence, the knock on effect in ability to work and earn money and a life long down grade in the structure of the knee.

I speak from experience on this, if you’re an average Joe or Jane in the UK, you will not receive a carefully thought out surgical repair by a team of concerned experts gathered purely to resolve your injury and to get you back to elite sports status in optimal time, rather expect the slightly more downmarket, “Well, you can still sort of walk / don’t do risky things anymore” treatment for us in the cheap seats of life.

It’s smart to learn from your mistakes.

It’s smarter to learn from someone else’s mistakes.

This injury was caused by one simple error in delivering his kicks which set him up for this … set back.

Here we’ll look at what happened and several options for preventing it happening to you, suitability issues for the trainee to consider, tactics to try and five instructional videos showing solid Kick Boxing, MMA and Muay Thai basics for upgrading your survival fighting skills.
