Hand and wrist protection
I use several methods to indoctrinate hand and wrist safety in workshops when sharing striking methods.
I also, often need to switch quickly from striking to grappling ideas (often including weapons) and many times this will be within the same scenario idea or drill.
Hand wrapping is a universally accepted way of protecting the hands.
Boxing and MMA
In most boxing and MMA schools this will be done with wraps between the fingers and tape added as well to form complete protection prior to gloves being worn.
Bareknuckle
I like to use wraps as a basic form of protection, but for many years have favoured a style of wrapping for bareknuckle fights that allows a medium between protecting the thumbs and wrist (which are particularly vulnerable during survival fighting) and allowing the nearest feeling to a naked hand as it will be in a real fight situation.
Survival
I alternate the use of bare hands, wraps, MMA and boxing gloves for striking practice depending on the needs of the training.
How to videos
Here are several video examples of hands being wrapped for bareknuckle fighting in the way that I have used and advise for students of survival fighting.
There are good explanations of an official event sanctioned method of wrapping, examples of the same fighter having his hands wrapped for two different events and a really good comparative instructional from Daru Strong ewetube channel featuring UK fighter Jake Bostwick that shows the difference between boxing and bareknuckle ways to self wrap the hands.
