London workshop:
A big thank you to those who have already signed up or donated to the “Safer Kids: Escaping Knife Crime” workshop on Saturday, January 27th in East Dulwich, London.
See this link for details including a donation link to help us save lives by funding bleed control kits for the local community dealing with knife crime:
Other upcoming stuff:
As I mentioned earlier, my usual open workshops in Stroud will start again on the 9th of Jan. There will also be (again in Stroud):
A special 5-week course for 11 - 17 year olds, Sundays starting from the 14th of January.
There’s also a one-off workshop for introductory self defence ideas for adults on Sunday, February 4th.
Please drop me an email if you’d like more details of either of these:

This Aide-Memoire:
Workshop content lists with additional content and stuff for paid supporters.
This will be part one, with some more content and ideas from Saturday’s workshop posted as a stand-alone post next.
Friday 15_12_23 (Private training)
Working with young local men with special needs on strategies for personal safety.
Saturday 16_12_23 (Private training)
This was a private workshop for the staff of a local business.
As well as covering introductory skills for escaping physical aggression we also looked at some situations they had already encountered when dealing with members of the public entering their workspaces uninvited during times when they were with clients including children.
This has obvious possible problems attached beyond the general security of the premises and we spent time exploring various strategies for having to softly and… less softly remove people from areas while keeping kids safe.
The premises are open to the public but there is also the fact that the small town has a large drug problem and the location is close to a specific space that is a focus point for drug and alcohol use with the attending spillover of potential problems that have raised their concern.
Disparity of force
The reality and implications of common imbalances during physical conflict were covered from both legal and experiential angles.
Physically dealing with a non-compliant and much larger person is an education in itself and is often useful in bringing much more clarity to those seeking realistic solutions to aggressive situations.
Honesty about our abilities to produce force is among our first steps to finding an effective counter to physical aggression that will work for us in a real crisis.
Anything else is, as the saying goes “Failing to prepare and preparing to fail” and may well increase our risk profile not just for us but for others too.
Feedback
Many thanks for the feedback especially this one:
“As a smaller person with a disability, this session really made me feel like I could defend myself … we even discussed self-defence with walking aids which made it feel even more accessible. 10/10, would love to do more of these!”
Job description versus personal safety
Some of the situations looked at revolved around public events. There should be ideally, some sort of security at such events and we considered factoring this into planning.
In addition to this though:
