Attacking the weak points
A handful of notes on initial watching of this video and the situation in terms of the idea of weak points and some follow-on thoughts.
Background
This was reported as the fatal stabbing of a woman, which kind of twists the impression (surely the first time in media history right?) of what seems to have happened. My comments are in brackets.
“A group of people, including the young woman, attacked a residence, using metal bars and knives to break through the door. Why? No information.
The homeowner, a 53-year-old man with a criminal history (legally this is of little relevance as the situation would be seen as an attempted assault to presumably murder by the attackers), defended himself by seizing a knife from one of the attackers and fatally stabbing the woman in the neck as she approached the door. (She wasn’t approaching the door, but rather in the process of smashing his door in and leaning into the resulting missing panel when stabbed).
Following this incident, the victim's (of her own actions) relatives sought revenge by attacking the son of the homeowner, leaving him gravely injured.
The homeowner remains at large (aka… on the run)”.
Weak points:
Responsibility
What caused this group reaction?
Going around being a selfish asshole in whatever way is not always a way to endear yourself to others. Screw up bad enough and things can happen. Fuck around, as they say, and you may truly find out.
Some incidents can be massive overreactions by idiots to a perceived slight too.
That being said, sometimes bad stuff just happens to people who aren’t responsible for anything other than being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Who knows, but the risk is reduced somewhat by attempting to lead an upright, honourable life, respecting others, and keeping ourselves to ourselves.
Just a thought.
They know where you live.
Never a good thing, regardless of the situation.
They arrive in numbers and are armed.
Fair fights are for dojos, sports, and movies.
The security gate was open
- so the owner probably wasn’t expecting trouble but it completely negates the point of having this gate if you leave it open!
Here in the UK this type of metalwork is common in some places and is an immediate indicator of what the local area is like in terms of burglary and so on when you see it. It is however very expensive to buy and so is beyond some families as an option for home security.
Although, after something happens it seems like a must-buy item all of a sudden, if you were putting it off before! Good luck getting a landlord to cough up for it, might be time to move again?
The door panel failed immediately:
allowing a possible entry route to open the door via the lock on the inside.
Investing in some kind of deadbolts and a better quality door is a good option and somewhat cheaper than metalwork. Doors can also be reinforced with other methods internally by the owner to protect the panels in which case though, the hinges and lock will be the weak point if not looked at.
I was told by a colleague at work once of a friend of his that was raided at home by the drugs squad and it took them nearly 45 minutes to breach the front door! So much for the element of surprise, I guess.
Talking of which…
The homeowner’s impulse for self-defence:
was not considered. He is reported to have armed himself with a blade taken from an attacker, but if this hadn’t happened, it could well have been grabbed from a kitchen in seconds within a small property like this and with the noise being made.
The longer the initial attack takes to reach the target, the more time that target has to counter in some way, not that I think this looks like any kind of “tactics” outfit in action here.
It’s worth noting here from a UK perspective that due to the lethal threat posed to him by multiple armed attackers, the knife use might have been a clear justifiable measure to counter an overwhelming disparity of what looks like lethal force - ask your solicitor first though!
If this was you, (and I can say this as I have been attacked in my own home by an armed mob trying to smash in my door in the middle of the night many years ago), might this make you reconsider knife use and your ability to defend your or your families lives in a situation like this?
In my case, the thought of being imminently murdered or dragged out into the street to be beaten for reasons unknown to me at the time was not something I was going to allow to happen without total resistance, and you will be shocked at how fast your mind arrives at this resolve.
Risk vs reward
The soon-to-be-dead woman didn’t consider that her throat was a viable target for an armed home defender. Her own risk to a counterattack was forgotten in the rush to inflict injury on someone else. The old adage of there being a moment of vulnerability in attack was certainly true here.
Retribution:
If the main target was not accessible, younger members of the family were, and the mob then goes for them at a second location.
And here is the least palatable reality of what defending yourself might really mean for an average person. That by doing so, the situation simply does not end as the experts say on Ewetube with your favourite signature “fight ender” (available now as a download!!!!) technique and bad-boy frown (tattoos help here too).
There can be endless consequences to situations and more people can become involved in your persecution after the incident as the perpetrator follows up with recruitment, legal games, and in this case, attacking your family members.
Events like this can only mean that if you can, you run from the location immediately to stay breathing because even if you defend successfully, now what?
The group will be back or you will face reprisal as in this case. Reprisal and revenge is a very real fact of situations that is seldom considered in self-defence thinking.
