This video example interested me as an example of needless confrontation and tied in as a companion piece to looking at “Stop and Search” and its creep outwards to become an accepted part of daily living.

Shoplifting definition

Nicking something right? Well, legally it will be explained thusly:

“Dishonestly appropriating property without the consent of its owner with the intention of depriving the owner of it”.

So to be suspected of shoplifting or furthermore accused of it, you would be:

Dishonest

Taking possession of someone else’s property

Removing the property from the location and thus depriving them of it.

This seems straightforward enough. But misunderstandings and mistakes do happen and if you were running a business and needed to stop someone you thought had stolen something from you without paying for it, how could you be more sure of your actions?

A Loss Prevention Model

Some background reading and perhaps, a new pastime for readers to enjoy analysing the other wildlife present while food shopping at the local supermarket…
