These are the notes from the Tuesday 28th Jan workshop where I covered the situation of receiving a barrage of punches to the head and some solutions to this to enable you to create space to begin to counter.

We only managed to complete part of the content of the following manual in the time we had, so will return to it over further upcoming workshops as there’s quite a bit of material, but here is the full progression that will be covered.

This is a really useful concept for survival fight training. You’ll also find it very handy for sparring and practice as it gives you the ability to not just defend but to position yourself better to counter with a lessened chance of eating punches in order to do so.

We’ll also cover a training progression for while you’re learning as well as ideas about how to apply this tactic in different ways to make it more universal in use as both offensive and defensive in nature depending on the situation as you may will NOT conveniently be facing someone of the same weight class as you, so I’ll look at the mixed person(s)/ weapons reality of usage: men defending against larger men, women defending against men, two or more attackers, knives, and so on.

This is an over 1,300 word manual that will provide weeks of productive training. Become a paid supporter and get the whole thing PLUS over 500 other articles for around the price of a beer! (Actually <0.5 of a beer if you go to one of those thieving hipster bars…).

Before we start…

Please look at this long form article on certain specific situational aspects of head defence with video examples that I wrote for students a while back (including: Keysi / 52 Blocks / Defence Lab / Andy Norman / Straight Blast Gym /Old school boxing / Vunak /Skull n Bones /Archie Moore /George Foreman) , before moving on to some definitions of ideas I’ll be referring to as we work though the material:
