James is a writer from Baltimore U.S.A and is best known for his book, the Paladin Press 2001 edged weapons classic, The Logic of Steel (A fighter’s view of blade and shank encounters), part of a four year study he carried out in Baltimore in the 1990’s called “The violence project”, documenting many real life incidents between predators and victims that he interviewed.
In terms of writing, “prolific” is not a sufficient enough word to use to describe his output as James has published over 140 books on various subjects including (but not limited to) combat, history, fiction and more. This is even more remarkable in light of the fact that James is homeless and truly embodies his nickname of “The Hobo Historian”. He now travels constantly, writing books and blogging (at www.jameslafond.com) as he goes and giving a truly unique and straight talking first-hand account of the people and places that make up modern America.
I’ve corresponded with James by email for quite a while now and he has been nothing but supportive of my humble efforts at writing. He wrote a review of my first book “Self Defence: Vol 1” and also gave me the honour of writing the foreword to his new and final book about fighting, “On Combat” which is being published later this year.
James kindly agreed to answer questions for The One In One Journal readers which he did in his trademark honest, no holds barred style !
