An addendum to "Three words" from Self Defence Volume 2
Expectations may…
…exceed reality.
“Three words”, an addendum:
The following is an addendum, of sorts, to the chapter “Three words” from my second book “Self defence volume 2”.
Watch the video below which I’ve included here with a couple of notes to illustrate some of the themes of that chapter as well as some other points.
Here’s the video link:

A knight’s tale
One of the things I discuss in the book is that becoming embroiled in any situation that carries the risk of needless physical conflict is not only fruitless but is actually a threat to you on many levels not just physical. In the video we see “Sir Galahad” bravely defending a lady’s honour from a group of guys that have allegedly called her a bitch.
It’s actually unclear if this damsel in distress is still there at this point - possibly she has more sense, although by the look of him, I doubt it.
What follows is the classic “White knight” syndrome of defending honour and demanding apologies from wrong doers who, to the surprise of no one, refuse.
What now? Well, the obligatory posturing and carrying on:
“Apologise!” met with,
“Walk away like a man!”
Galahad is taller and is probably operating on a flawed logic system that this translates to combative prowess - luckily for him it seems that the nemesis he encounters is not ready or even able to fight. But before he can ride into the already set sun he is pursued by the fallen knight’s man servant who is dispatched despite a moving display of loyalty to his master with some mediocre punches.
Adrenaline
If you listen to the audio here, you can hear the adrenaline causing Galahad’s voice to rise to pre puberty levels. I’ve discussed this less talked about effect of the hormone in workshops, that at key moments in conflict, your voice will go higher due to tightening of the neck muscles and your breathing pattern changing. So much for sounding cool as you deliver your scathing put down!
“What the fuck is he doing?!”
He has sprinted off to the puzzlement of a bystander.
Predictably, the sad encounter ends with Galahad’s arrest while be screamed at by the now resuscitated manservant with the alleged fair maiden, nowhere to be seen.
What is defended?
Risking the safety of yourself and anyone with you by this kind of behaviour is not “honourable”.
There are no duels between gentlemen anymore, just squalid violent encounters between idiots, high on ego and fantasies of their own manhood.
This is not defence of the self but, rather, defence of pride and is consensual fighting - either side could have left but the last word (and punch) must be had.
An elaborate ritual is then played out in order to enact this fantasy. This is not always the case, some play for keeps and will follow up any perceived slight with immediate and overwhelming violence unlike that which is displayed here.
A threat to your physical wellbeing or that of a partner is a totally different situation and would warrant a very different outlook.
The things that people say mean nothing, it doesn’t feel good to walk from and will continue to bother you perhaps but not in the same way as injury (potentially life changing), legal punishment, retribution or even, death.
