Wow, that is very unsettling. I wonder if the guy just experienced a kind of cognitive dissonance. Not expecting to see a large muscular being in short shorts, wielding a very large axe, so it didn’t make sense to him, hence the bemusement? Perhaps he asked if the attacker were going to a fancy dress party?!
(I’ve got a friend in Hawaii who took a chainsaw to a Hallowe’en street party, referencing the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. He took the chain off, and was annoyed that the police had any kind of issue with him running around the streets waving this thing at people….).
I suppose the thing is you never know, with beards and hair, under which circumstances they will be a more of a hindrance or more a help.
It’s hard to imagine a lot of protection provided by a heavy beard. On the whole, you’d say a helmet is better? I’ve been disappointed with my beard-growing efforts so far.
