This is a great training method that I got from my friend Coach Srba Cvijetic in Serbia. I mentioned before that I’ve regularly spent time at Srba’s gym over there and one of the main focus areas of my last trip was improving the efficacy of roundhouse kicks.

I experienced a really big upgrade in my ability to throw round kicks after this work period and it’s made me reappraise the kick a great deal for its use in the survival rather than sporting context. I’m sharing it here along with a couple of extra add-ons in the hope that it may do the same for you.

Now before we continue, I would like you to (re)read the two preceding long articles on round kicks in the links below.

Make sure that you’re familiar with the main points there, especially to do with safety before you attempt the power program shared later in this post.

Power: Because weak kicks are no good to anyone.

This method is focused squarely on power development. If you’re going to kick someone make it damn hard or maybe save the energy for something else more useful.

In some ways, the kick itself is almost secondary, as I’ve found that this method can be plugged into almost any program and simply adapted to develop power for a multitude of different strikes or tactics.

When you have this down, start applying it to other stuff, and let me know how you get on.

Sections

First, after the basic kit that is needed, I will look at ways of prepping for the main work.

Then the method itself is split into two main sections:

Ingraining movement quality

Power

I’ll then look at conditioning effect and frequency.
