In memory of Jane
I was so saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Hock’s wife, Jane, this weekend.
Last night’s workshop was dedicated to her memory and I wanted to just briefly repeat what was said there.
Over the years of training with Hock and ultimately sharing that training with others, it was always evident how integral both Jane and her work were to the development and running of Force Necessary.
While I never got to meet her in person, I had many contacts with her over the years, both arranging seminars and also certifications for my students, who she showed a personal and individual interest in and that left a lasting impression on me of that rarest of things, a genuine and caring person.
Jane’s motto was “Do not walk through time without leaving worthy evidence of your passage.”
Here I am, just like many others, thousands of miles away, aware of the fact that if it wasn’t for Jane and her work, my life and the opportunities for experiences, learning and meeting other people this training has given me would likely, never have happened.
Those of us in the Force Necessary family, and it is a worldwide family, will feel a huge sense of loss made by her absence but also her continued presence in all that we do.
Our thoughts and hearts are with our good friend Hock and family members at this difficult time.

Topic:
Our final workshop prior to the summer hiatus.
Survival fighting skills against a single, unarmed and edged weapon threat
Culminating the recent work to take all trainees to the required level of preparation for when workshops restart in September.
Prep work
Solo practice and visualisation of straight and hook kicks
Please refer to this supporter article which I referenced in the workshop for extensive learning points on Workshop safety, illustrated tactics and targets, examples, survival/ MMA / Kick boxing and Muay Thai context PLUS five how to videos.
Grappling and kicking
Here trainees work to find specific kicks within the framework of the Stop Six concept from Hock’s Force Necessary course.
There was a brief discussion on the first problem and classic situation of finger pointing / argument distance and how this is not the limit of this problem area which expands dramatically with the involvement of weapons.
Hand to hand, forearm collisions and arm restraints and strangle / chokes were used as continuous work on instinctively finding the opportunity to kick the aggressor using kicks designed to debilitate and create space for further action if needed.
Unarmed vs knife threats
Solo practice and visualisation of knife set one, complete, extensive instructions for which, including performance and targeting can be found in my book Self defence volume one or here for paid supporters:
This abbreviated training set, establishes the highest percentage attacks from knife crime research from the UK and elsewhere, which then become the first area of study for all trainees.
We are not learning an art, there may be no time for such a luxury.
We are learning:
The most likely thing that will happen
How it will happen
And then, what we can do to stop it happening to us right now!
Here we looked at two simple “First contact” tactics.
Minimisation of wounding
Diminishing to create opportunities for control
The next step is the important understanding of the immediate potential response of even an UNTRAINED person armed with a knife to simply counter your first contact tactic.
Experiencing these responses and intuitively understanding them, refocuses the mind back on the first contact method and makes it clearer as to which strategies will yield the best chance of control, countering and escape.
Unarmed evasion skills
Removing fear from evading strikes to the head and high volume practice at increasing speed.
Mechanics of evasion.
Kick boxing
Multiple rounds of limited sparring.
